Rail safe project

Introduction

According to the Swedish Transport Agency,109 people were killed in 2013 in the rail accidents. The high number of fatalities demand a robust rail track surveillance  system. In this work, we aim to develop a wireless camera based surveillance system which is able to transmit useful information to train operators before approaching accident-prone areas.

Smart Camera Node

The node consists of infrared and visual imagers for providing 24 hour surveillance regardless of the weather condition. The node performs processing locally in order to detect moving objects such as humans and vehicles and subsequently transmits warnings to nearby train operators.

Warning Application

The system uses the Sensible Things platform in order to transmit warnings from the camera node, in real-time over a wireless link. A warning and field of view image are then displayed on the remote device in the train in order to help train operator in decision making.
