SLIDES FOR MY LECTURES

Attendance at meetings on the course are not compulsory, so all lectures will be an optional extra. I aim to upload the slides for my lectures in PDF-format here at least 24 hours prior to a meeting.

REVISION RESOURCES

A sample examination paper and some old exam papers can be found below.

Note that we have a new exam format since September 2007, so the specimen paper is the only one of the same format as the papers students will be sitting in exams from June 2008 onwards.
Details of the bonus point scheme and how exams are graded can be found in the note about course organisation below or by clicking here.

RECOMMENDED TO-DO-LIST FOR
DECEMBER 2007 & WEEKS 1 - 3 OF 2008

Get organised in time for term start:
  • Register on the course.

  • Read the note on how to study this course.

  • Get hold of a copy of the course books (see resources bar left) and spend some time studying their structure: find the list of contents, find the index. Where are the exercises? Are there any hints and solutions for exercises?

  • Read the note on how to read a maths book.

  • I recommend using Mozilla's Firefox browser to view my webpages as generally this browser works well on all platforms.

  • Make sure you have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. You will need it for reading the course assignments and other pages uploaded on this site. Acrobat Reader is free to download from Adobe.

  • If it is a long time ago that you studied mathematics last and/or if mathematics was not your best subject in school, it is a good idea to brush up on your mathematical skills:

In order to help you assess whether your mathematical skills may be in need of refreshment, we have designed two self-assessment tests, each of duration half an hour, which you are advised to do as soon as possible, preferably in August, before you start your new study programme. One of them is a Numeracy test which tests your number and arithmetic skills, the other is a Basic algebra test which tests your skills in manipulating algebraic expressions and simple equations.

  • I hope you attended the August prep-course in mathematics for which you received an invitation in your letter of acceptance. This course will have helped you to get started with logical thinking and revision of elementary mathematical skills needed both for this course and any programming courses you may want to do in the future.

If you did not attend the August prep-course, but feel you are in need of revision, we have created a page with pre-university mathematics relevant to the course which can be accessed by clicking on the link here or the link in the resources bar left.

  • And finally: do not forget to have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
